Where did this mass of fluff come from?

This ball of “fluff” got my attention one day while scouting collards. I thought a bush hog had dismantled some insulation. To my surprise, when I approached the pile of fluff, I realized that it was not insulation but rather a large mass of cattail seeds. This time of year, ditch maintenance is common in the Lowcountry. One of the most prevalent ditch “weeds” is the common cattail,(Typha latifola). Apparently, this ditch was full of mature cattail loaded with seed heads. Can’t wait to see how many there will be next year in this spot. This farmer better develop a market for “corndogs”.
