Why is this young peach tree developing shoots with purple leaves?

The purple growth on this peach tree is coming from below the graft union. To help with disease resistance and other issues, peaches grown commercially in the US are always grafted. The rootstock (bottom portion of the tree) used may depend on the variety or disease issue in the area being planted. This peach has been grafted onto a ‘Guardian’ rootstock which is known for its vigorous growth. What is happening here is that the young tree may have been under stress from establishment and the vigorous rootstock is overwhelming the tree and putting out more growth than the scion (top portion or the tree). Peach trees, in the US, are grafted onto another Prunus species which could be another peach or even a plum. Guardian rootstock comes from a red-leafed peach, hence the reddish/purple shoots.
