What is this crop growing in the coastal region?

Rice was once a cornerstone of South Carolina’s economy, shaping the Lowcountry’s culture and landscape. In recent years, renewed interest in specialty rice varieties has sparked a revival of this historic crop. However, the availability of quality seed has declined to near-scarcity levels due to multiple, concurrent issues.
To address this, the Coastal Research and Education Center in Charleston, and other groups, are leading efforts to grow certified seed rice and rebuild seed stocks. Three heritage varieties are currently being cultivated to expand the supply and ensure future production. The rice pictured here is only a few weeks away from harvest, which is a promising step toward restoring one of South Carolina’s most iconic crops.
This week’s question is from Zack Snipes, Coastal Fruit and Vegetable Extension Agent.
