Where is Zack visiting this week?

Zack is visiting Hickory Bluff Berry Farm located just outside of Holly Hill, SC, in Berkeley County. Hickory Bluff is owned and operated by Michael and Karen Parker. The farm offers a wide range of produce throughout the growing season, though as you might guess, their specialty is berries. They grow strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, along with leafy greens, and are currently the largest producer of Brussels sprouts in South Carolina. Hickory Bluff also features an incredible farm stand where they sell fresh produce, flowers, jellies, jams, and other locally made South Carolina products. A personal favorite is their blueberry lemonade slushie, made with their own blueberries.

Hickory Bluff is a model example of farm diversification. In addition to growing and selling produce, they host numerous events throughout the year. Recently, the Parkers expanded their operation by investing in an on-site commercial kitchen that produces food sold in the farm stand. This kitchen allows them to utilize “seconds” from the farm that might otherwise be discarded. Another successful diversification effort is The Farmer’s Daughter food truck, also owned by the Parkers.

The Parkers have long been strong supporters of Clemson Extension and are early adopters of innovative and experimental ideas developed by agents and specialists. They are continually seeking new ways to improve production while reducing their environmental footprint. Recently, they have worked with Dr. Bilbo on releasing predatory mites to help manage two-spotted spider mites in strawberries. This fall, Clemson Extension agents also administered fumigant through the drip irrigation system, a new technology that improves both the safety and effectiveness of fumigant delivery. With the Parkers’ help, agents were able to learn and refine this technique, which will benefit hundreds of growers in the future.

Michael Parker is the immediate past president of the South Carolina Small Fruit Growers’ Association, a relatively new organization formed to provide a voice and resources for small fruit growers across the state. As a founding member, Michael played a key role in the group’s development and was instrumental in Clemson hiring two new specialists dedicated to fruit research for South Carolina growers. More information about SCSFGA or to join.
