What is this mean-looking critter?
The wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) is one of the most recognizable assassin bugs. It may be a mean-looking critter with a scary family name, but the wheel bug is beneficial. This unique insect is named after its gear-like “wheel” along its back. As one of the largest assassin bugs, it preys on pests such as caterpillars, beetles, and stink bugs. Wheel bugs capture their prey with a quick jab from their long, straw-like mouthparts. Once the prey is immobilized by a paralyzing toxin, the wheel bug uses its mouthparts to sip out the prey’s internal fluids (as shown in the photo). While beneficial, it is best to keep your distance, as it may bite in self-defense, which can be very painful.
