Which Upstate farm is Samantha visiting this week?

Inspired Greenhouses Hydroponic Farm is rooted in purpose. The hydroponic farm, based in Anderson County, South Carolina, offers meaningful employment opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities while producing high-quality, fresh produce. During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the farm’s mission serves as a reminder that growing local food can involve supporting opportunities for our community.
The original farm concept began in 2022 as the Homestead Project for InspireAbilities of Anderson County, intended to be an education-based initiative for those with intellectual disabilities served by the agency. The idea of in-ground planting was adapted to hydroponics, allowing plants to grow without soil, free from herbicides and pesticides, year-round. The new model allows employees to be involved in a well-rounded agricultural work system and earn supportive wages. The project expanded to an 18’x24’ hydroponic greenhouse, which provides meaningful, experiential learning opportunities to employ adults with intellectual disabilities. Today, Inspired Greenhouses is yet again in a season of growth as the expansion of their operation is underway, and four new 24’x108’ greenhouses will soon be completed.

More production space and technological improvements will soon support more employees in Anderson County while establishing an optimal growing model for farmers facing adversity with traditional in-ground planting methods. Farmers face limited winter daylight hours, temperature shifts, and summer humidity. The technology utilized by Inspired Greenhouses Hydroponic Farm eliminates these challenges by using a controlled environment, and the new greenhouses will position the farm to meet rapidly growing demand while significantly expanding its impact.
Their greenhouses primarily produce leafy greens and herbs, and they intend to expand to hydroponically produced tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Beyond the greenhouse, the farm is growing blueberries, pumpkins, and sunflowers to create additional opportunities for employees to participate in other aspects of farming. Together, these efforts provide exposure to various agricultural methods in an urban setting for people with disabilities.

Inspired Greenhouses products can be found at several locations throughout the Anderson area, including PF Meat Co. Butchery & Market, Whitehall Produce, Hometown Market, and Clemson Area Food Exchange online marketplace. As production increases, the farm will be able to supply more retail and wholesale outlets with fresh produce year-round, strengthening the connections between local agriculture and the community. This grower spotlight is about more than plants or technology inside the greenhouses; it’s about people and opportunity. Inspired Greenhouses Hydroponic Farm has created a space where individuals with intellectual disabilities can step outside their comfort zones to build confidence and independence, develop meaningful skills, and experience the pride that comes from being central to a mission-driven operation. Through hands-on work that offers jobs with real wages, employees of the farm demonstrate what is possible when people and their abilities have opportunities to thrive.
Inspired Greenhouse Hydroponic Farm is growing more than plants; they are cultivating confidence, purpose, and a workforce where individuals of all abilities can flourish.
This month’s spotlight is from Samantha Brown, Upstate Fruit and Vegetable Agent.
