Question of the Week – Strawberry Planting/Picking Machine

What is this homemade machine used for?

This machine was built to aid in strawberry planting and picking. The driver lies on their stomach and operates it with a switch to move forward and a hand brake to stop. This allows the driver to creep down the row to pick or plant strawberries without bending over. This machine was created around 15 years ago by the Tinsley family of Pinebreeze Farm in Pelzer, SC. It was made from the frame and wheels of two bicycles and is powered by an electric motor. There is also a cover on top of the frame to provide a little shade. This machine is an interesting example of agricultural ingenuity.

This week’s question is from Andy Rollins, Upstate Fruit and Vegetable Agent.
